Christian Theodicy
In Defense of Christian Theodicy, José Luis Avendaño offers a penetrating study of the German reformer's thought, beginning with the question of suffering and divine justice. The author shows how, for Luther, the true understanding of God is revealed on the cross, where human power and wisdom dissolve before the mystery of redeeming love. With a solid theological foundation and remarkable pastoral sensitivity, Avendaño connects Lutheran theology with contemporary concerns of faith, inviting the reader to contemplate the cross as the place where human suffering and the glory of God are reconciled.
In The American Religious Shadow, theologian José Luis Avendaño lucidly examines the profound influence of North American religious thought on faith and church practice in Latin America. Through historical and theological analysis, the author reveals how certain cultural and spiritual models imported from the United States have shaped a religiosity alien to the Latin American context. With a critical yet pastoral tone, Avendaño calls for a re-examination of regional theological identity, inviting a rediscovery of a more biblical, contextual faith centered on the grace of God. The result is a serious and provocative work that challenges both leaders and believers committed to the renewal of the church.
In this work, Pierre-Charles Marcel develops a robust theological exposition of baptism within the framework of the covenant of grace. Drawing on careful biblical exegesis and Reformed tradition, the author demonstrates that baptism constitutes a sign and seal of the divine covenant, evidencing its continuity with Old Testament circumcision. Marcel argues that the sacrament is not merely an external rite, but a visible expression of God's grace and the incorporation of the believer—adult or infant—into the covenant community.
Pierre-Charles Marcel (1910–1992) was a prominent French Reformed theologian and pastor, founder and editor of La Revue Réformée. His thought, deeply influenced by covenant theology, contributed significantly to the development of 20th-century Reformed thought.
